Basketball National League-Hawks smash Baya for first-round clean sheet

PLS Hawks’ veteran player Jim Domingue beat Baya’s defence to remain topIn their last first-round league match on Saturday, PLS Hawks comfortably defeated third-placed Baya 107-59 in the one-sided affair at the Victoria Gymnasium.

The encounter which was being broadcasted live on the national television seemed to be closely contested after the first quarter which ended 25-23 in favour of Hawks.

The match then turned into a one-way affair as PLS Hawks started to punish Baya who were missing some very easy scoring opportunities. The second quarter ended 26-13 in favour of Hawks, handing them a 51-36 half-time lead.

Matters turned from bad to worse for Baya in the third and fourth quarter which they heavily lost 33-10 and 23-13 respectively.

Hawks’ Nigerian import Alao Solomon led their scoring with 32 points.
PLS Hawks have now a maximum 16 points out eight matches, while Baya have been relegated to the third spot with 14 points from six wins and two losses out of eight matches. Second-placed Mont Fleuri Dawgz have similar statistics to Baya, with only a superior basket difference.

Fourth-placed Premium Cobras are also on 14 points from six wins and two losses out of eight matches. In their last first-round league match on Saturday, they defeated Drifters 75-49.

Anse Boileau-based Angels ended the first half of the league campaign in the fifth position on 12 points. They have registered four wins and four losses in eight matches played.

A point behind are sixth-placed MBU Rockers who have registered three wins and five losses.
It is only basket differences that separate the bottom three teams – Cascade Bullets, RC Dynamics and Drifters – who are on nine points each from a single win and seven defeats.

In the women’s league, defending champions Anse Etoile Stars are leading with maximum eight points from four wins out of four matches. They are followed by Mont Fleuri who have gathered seven points after winning three matches and losing one. HotShots are third on six points, after registering twovictories and two losses, while on five points from a single win and three defeats, RA Sisters are fourth. Juniors are carrying the weight of the league table with four points after four defeats.

In the men’s division two league, Praslin Warriors are leading the standings with 11 points from five wins and a single loss, similar to second-placed Beau Vallon Heat who have an inferior basket difference.

Anse Etoile are third on 10 points after registering four wins and two defeats in six matches, while Razors are fourth on nine points. They have collected three wins and three losses, similar to AAP who have an inferior basket difference.

With a single win and five losses, Cadets are sixth on seven points, one more than tailenders Juniors who have registered six defeat in as many matches.

Meanwhile, the transfer window will be open as from today, until July 2, while the second round of the league will resume on July 4.
