Volleyball: National League-La Digue, Premium Spikers lead the chase |03 July 2012

After acquiring former Seychelles setter Avrille Hoareau from Island Girls and rapid attacker Beguitta Crispin from Praslin Volleyball Club (PVC), La Digue have joined the usual big guns in the race for the women’s championship crown.

With Seychelles women’s national team coach Nichol Lesperance dictating things from the substitutes’ bench, La Digue earned two more victories at the Palais des Sports this weekend, bringing their number of wins to seven in nine games to lead the eight-team standings with 23 points.

On Saturday, La Digue played a five-set 128-minute thriller against former champions Arsu before winning 3-2 (26-28, 25-19, 25-11, 24-26, 15-8) and returned to the same venue the following day to beat OSC Comets 3-1 (17-25, 25-13, 25-12, 25-22).

Cascade needed just 55 minutes to whitewash PVC 3-0 (25-13, 25-12, 25-14), bringing their points tally to 22 after seven wins and a loss in eight games played. PVC did have something to cheer about when they inflicted an eighth consecutive defeat on bottom club Santa West with a 3-1 (25-14, 25-15, 22-25, 25-13) win.

Defending champions Friends are in third position on the table with 19 points after collecting their sixth victory in seven games. Friends squandered a two-set lead but had enough energy in the tie-breaker to out-power Juniors for a 3-2 (25-21, 25-17, 21-25, 14-25, 15-12) victory.

Arsu are fourth with 19 points (five wins and three defeats), Juniors fifth with 14 points (three wins and five defeats), PVC sixth with 11 points (two wins and five defeats) and OSC Comets seventh with nine points (one wins and six defeats).

In the men’s division one league, outgoing champions Premium Spikers had no trouble silencing Neo Boyz and their former setter Jones Camille with a 3-0 (25-21, 25-19, 25-20) victory to stay unbeaten in five games for a maximum 15 points.

Beau Vallon are hot on Premium Spikers’ heels with 18 points (four wins and a loss) after taking exactly one hour to whitewash winless Anse Royale 3-0 (25-15, 25-16, 25-14), while Racing Club collected only their second win with a 3-0 (25-14, 25-17, 25-20) victory over BSA Spikers.

Neo Boyz (11 points for three wins and two losses), Racing Club (nine points for two wins and three losses), BSA Spikers (five points for one win and four losses) and Anse Royale (four points for five losses) are occupying third, fourth, fifth and sixth places.

Meanwhile, in the women’s bottom division, Rainbow United extended their unbeaten run to eight games with a 3-0 (25-21, 25-15, 25-21) thrashing of Bel Ombre, while leaders Roots Sisters, who have collected eight wins and a defeat in nine games, took just 40 minutes to dispatch Aros 3-0 (25-9, 25-4, 25-8).

Defending champions Island Girls seem to be finding the going tough this time with six wins in eight games to occupy third place with 20 points.

In the men’s division two league, Cadets celebrated a first win, beating Juniors 3-1 (29-27, 22-25, 25-21, 25-17). Despite the win, Cadets stay rooted to the bottom of the standings with an inferior set score difference of -12 despite having the same number of points – 8 – as Juniors whose set score difference stands at -8.
