Fitness Seychelles-Senior citizens day out

Senior citizens during yesterday’s stay-young keep-fit sessions at the Beau Vallon beach

Marie-Ange Francourt of the Sports For All Unit (SFAU) within the National Sports Council ran the one-hour session and said she is happy with the active involvement of the senior citizens.

The SFAU usually runs stay-young keep-fit sessions inside community centres but has decided to bring them outdoor now.

A spokesperson for the SFAU told Sports Nation that most of the senior citizens are using these sessions to prepare for the forthcoming fourth senior citizens’ sports day when senior citizens from all over the country, including Praslin and La Digue, take part in various individual and team events like 100m walk, 60m run, 4x100m run, soft ball throw, petanque, dominoes and running with bundles of clothes on the head (pake lenz lo latet).

They are divided into different age groups – 50-60 years, 61-65 years, 66-70 years, and over 70 years – and the top three in each event earn points – 10, 8 and 6 – which are added to their district’s total.

The Plaisance district team are the defending champions after retaining the title last year.
Other than the overall best trophy, Plaisance also won the trophy for Best Performance during 2011, while Cascade and Mont Fleuri shared the trophy for Best Motivated District.
