Series of activities to celebrate Feast of Assumption on La Digue

With the large number of locals and visitors expected to gather on La Digue – as is the case every year – the Seychelles Tourism Board (STB) and the island’s administration have for the third consecutive year joined forces to organise a series of activities to celebrate this religious feast.

The activities were to start yesterday and will go on during the weekend before culminating on August 15.

On yesterday afternoon’s programme was a basketball jamboree followed by a musical performance by various local artists in the evening.

Today from 10am to 5.30pm, there will be more exciting competitions with a yacht race from Mahé to La Digue as well as other sports activities like football, basketball, petanque, beach volleyball, triathlon and bicycle race. After the eventful day of sports, there will be a Sware Kreol and other entertainment starting at 7.30pm. All the entertainment will go on well into the night.

Tomorrow (Sunday August 12), there will be another interesting fun day of sports and entertainment. This will be followed in the evening by a children’s show – ‘Les enfants chantent Jenny’.

There will be other activities and entertainment throughout, but on a smaller scale, on Monday and Tuesday August 13 and 14. In the evening of Tuesday August 14, the activities will be more animated with live musical performances and an open-air disco.

As for the big day, August 15, the highlight – as is tradition – will be the grand gathering for the open-air mass at ‘La Grotto’ and the procession through La Digue leading to the St Mary’s church.

An array of activities will also be available all day long, including more entertainment that will last until late at night.

Food and drinks will be available from vendors on all six days of celebration. The Seychelles Broadcasting Corporation in partnership with the STB will again be on La Digue with its ‘Paradise FM’ team to broadcast live and add to the ambiance.
