Second semester begins for third SYLP cohort |17 August 2012

Under the direction of UniSey’s pro-vice-chancellor Lucy Athanasius, in collaboration with Dr Michael Mulreany, director of the Institute of Public Administration (IPA), Ireland, and coordinated by Dr John Nolan, special advisor on education to the President, the second semester will encompass three further modules of the IPA’s MA degree programme in Leadership and Strategy, and a UniSey programme of local leadership training.

Lectures in the MA degree (Leadership and Strategy), which will focus on the three modules of Finance, Economics, and Research Methods, will be presented by IPA visiting lecturers Nathy Walsh and Stephen Weir.

In addition to their attendance at lectures, the 24 SYLP students will be required to submit written assignments in each module. The formal written examinations at the end of the second semester (year one) in the three modules will be held at the end of January 2013.

Along with the text books and specially devised lecture notes in the three modules, the SYLP students will have on-line access to the IPA library in Dublin, which contains a comprehensive range of journals and other reference material related to the modules being studied in the second semester.

The module in Research Methods prepares the SYLP students to undertake a dissertation in year two.

During the second semester, the SYLP students will also attend other lecture sessions to be presented by UniSey lecturers and invited local experts, which will cover the following: the Seychelles tourism industry; the Seychelles fishing industry; sustainable development; corporate governance; ethics and Seychelles’ off-shore industry, to mention a few.

Moreover, the 24 SYLP students will be required to complete a key aspect of the two-year SYLP programme by engaging in a special one-month district attachment project during November 2012.
