Football: Land Marine Cup-The Lions roar past Beginners |18 August 2012

Last year, Beginners, who ply their trade in the inner islands league, created a major upset when they gunned down their more illustrious neighbours – first divisioners Côte d’Or.

This year though there was not to be another fairytale story as The Lions grabbed the match by the scruff of its neck and almost took an early lead in the first minute as captain Randolph Lablache exchanged passes from his own half with Darrel Damoo but the latter’s cross flashed across goal with Jude Nancy too slow to react.

The Lions duly took the lead in the 16th minute through Damoo who picked up a long cross-field pass and in acres of space, the former Northern Dynamo striker hit the post. However, Damoo got a second bite of the cherry to ram home the rebound for a 1-0 lead.

Two minutes later, Beginners’ Warren Esther should have done better with a free header from a long free-kick by Sandrick Ladouce but he headed wide of goalkeeper Jerome Dingwall’s goal.

Just past the half-hour mark, Beginners’ Lenny Alcindor forced a good save out of goalkeeper Dingwall with a sweetly struck volley after Warren Esther had set him up.

The Lions though were still the better side as they enjoyed plenty of possession and in the 38th minute Dave Max released Damoo whose burst of speed took him past a couple of defender. Damoo then laid the ball on a plate to captain Lablache who easily scored past goalkeeper Joel Dugasse for a 2-0 advantage.

Two minutes later, The Lions stretched their advantage after some good work by captain Lablache to skip past the whole defence and round goalie Dugasse before cutting the ball back to Max who thumped it into the net to make it 3-0.

The Lions made a double substitution early in the second half and coach Gavin Jeanne was rewarded on the hour mark as substitute Juiad Boniface fired past goalkeeper Dugasse to make it 4-0.

Beginners were denied a clear penalty by referee Jean-Claude Labrosse as goalkeeper Dingwall fouled Alcindor who had latched onto Darrel Lesperance poor back pass in the 64th minute.

The Lions though were easy winners in the end and move to the next stage.
