The contract for the R4.6 million project was signed Tuesday by chief fire officer Andre Morel and the managing director of Furui Construction Jennifer Coelho in a short ceremony at Independence House.

This was in the presence of the Minister for Home Affairs and Transport Joel Morgan, the member of the National Assembly for Inner Islands Chantal Ghislain – who requested for the station in the assembly – district administrator Barbara Barallon and senior officials of the Fire and Rescue Services Agency.

Mr Morel said the new fire station is part of government’s policy to decentralise the fire fighting and rescue services.

He added that this will provide a more effective service to the community.

Calling it a big step, Mr Morel said that the signing of a similar contract for a new fire station for Praslin’s Eve Island is scheduled soon.

The project on La Digue should take about nine months to complete.

Mr Morel later told Nation that 12 firemen will be based on La Digue when the station becomes operational.

They will be equipped with two medium-sized fire engines.

Ms Coelho said Furui Construction will do its very best to carry out the project with high quality and within the agreed time frame.
