Journalists urged to consider gender when reporting |17 October 2012

This was the focus of a two-day workshop on gender sensitive reporting held at the Gold Crest hotel, in Quatre Bornes Mauritius.

Seychelles was represented by four journalists from the Seychelles Broadcasting Corporation and the Seychelles Nation.

The workshop was aimed at equipping journalists with skills relating to gender-sensitive reporting.

Also attending were Mauritian journalists and media students from the University of Mauritius.
The course has been organised by the university in collaboration with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco).

Gender Links executive director Collen Lowe-Morna and its francophone director Loga Virahsawmy were the ones leading the first session.

Those taking part learned more on the various gender concepts, the relations between gender and the media and how to identify gender gaps in news reports.

Journalists had the chance to analyse news articles and to find ways of making reports more gender balanced.

During the second session, professors from the university talked about the various gender issues, gender based violence and the media’s role in educating the public on the subject.

The group is now taking part in another workshop aimed at bringing more awareness on ethics in journalism.
