‘Chevening scholarships open to all’

Mrs Skoll giving details of the Chevening Scholarships yesterdayApplications for the prestigious global scholarship programme of the UK government will be accepted until December 20, 2012, she said, adding the scholarships are funded by the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) and partner organisations and operate in over 100 countries worldwide.

“This year the programme will support about 700 students. Awards are typically for a one-year Master’s degree in any subject and at any UK university,” she said in a presentation to journalists from the local print media.

The FCO says the programme gives a unique chance for future leaders to build “a global network of continuing professional significance”.

“It enables talented individuals to establish social, cultural, academic or commercial partnerships with the UK. With 2012 marking the launch of our global website, www.chevening.org, we expect this year’s Chevening Scholarships to be more accessible than ever before.”

Mrs Skoll said by registering their interest in advance and applying for a scholarship, candidates will receive alerts at key stages in the process and find out more about the process and priorities.

She said the scholarships are particularly aimed at high calibre candidates who have the potential to be future leaders in their fields and bring their experience back to Seychelles for the benefit of their country.

“There is no age, gender, social or subject restrictions, but candidates who have already demonstrated leadership potential and have strong first degrees will be particularly welcome.

The British High Commission in Victoria is especially – but not exclusively – keen to attract candidates with a background in good governance with an emphasis on social policy; environmental management; disaster risk management; climate change and conservation; freedom of press and journalism; judiciary and social work and welfare and psychology.”

She advised interested persons to visit the website at http://www.chevening.org/seychelles more information and details on how to apply.
