Anse Royale Youth Hostel’s best students rewarded |19 November 2012
The gathering was attended by the members of the National Assembly for Grand Anse Praslin Marc Volcère, Baie Ste Anne Natasha Esther and Anse Royale Dereck Samson.
House manager Roger Alphonse, who has been in the post for 13 years, said that while most youths behaved in an exemplary manner, a few did not and in 2012, the hostel had to take disciplinary actions which included sending off some residents.
Mr Alphonse urged parents to do more to instil the values of respect, politeness and savoir-vivre into their children, bearing in mind that this is very important for their future.
He said a lot of emphasis has been laid on home economics, including growing their own vegetables and cooking their own food.
Mr Alphonse thanked several volunteers who had given their time – as late as 8pm – to the students’ welfare.
Various prizes were presented in recognition of various contributions made in 2012. The award for the best girl overall at the hostel went to Dorette Cupidon, while Travis Barbé took the award for the boys.
These were presented by Mr Volcère and Ms Esther.
The prize for the best unit, presented by JJ Spirit Foundation chief executive Eddy Charles, went to Andrew Lesperance.
Dorette Cupidon also collected the award for best student overall presented by Noella Shamlaye, who was the first house manager of the hostel.
The occasion was also marked by an exhibition, covering some of the students’ extra-curricular activities, including their own garden.
The event was closed by cultural performances, notably music and dancing.
