Rotary Club gives R20,000 for care of cancer patients

The cheque presentation

A cheque for that amount was handed over last week by the Rotary Club president Roland Rassool to the principal secretary for health Veronique Laporte in a short ceremony held at the Red Roof building of the Seychelles Hospital.

The money will go to the cancer unit of the Seychelles Hospital, where it will be used in various ways including medication, items and other care needed to make the patients more comfortable.

Mr Rassool said the initiative began when a fellow Rotarian who recently passed away – Dr George Panovsky – expressed his wish that should he pass away, the money to be spent on flowers and other gifts for him should instead be collected and given to cancer care.

“We honoured his wish and passed the hat around, so to speak, and Rotarians made a significant contribution of R10,000, which the club matched. So now we are proud to say that we have honoured Dr George’s wish,” said Mr Rassool.

Physician Dr George Panovsky – popularly known as Dr George – who passed away recently was appointed honorary consul for the Czech Republic in Seychelles in 2001. He was senior consultant physician and consultant-in-charge for internal medicine at the Seychelles Hospital, where he worked for 21 years. He was also a member of the Diabetic Society of Seychelles and the Rotary Club of Seychelles. He was also a keen sportsman, with a love for playing tennis.

Present at the cheque presentation ceremony were Dr George’s widow Sabina, representatives of the Cancer Concern Association, other Rotarians and staff of the hospital.
