Disabled display hidden talents

This was the second such event to be held – the first being in 2008 – and tickets were sold out well before the event took place.

On Tuesday night, the hall was packed full and present for the event were designated Minister Vincent Meriton and other cabinet ministers, principal secretaries and other high government officials, members of the diplomatic corps, relatives and supporters of the performers.

The show was one with a special touch, as students of the vocational unit of the National Council of the Disabled showcased their talents through various performances, alongside popular local artists and employees of the Airtel telecommunications company, the event’s host.

The company said that it would not merely make a donation to the council in the form of a cheque, but would rather create a dream, where the students would be made to feel included and part of the larger society.

After months of practice, Tuesday’s show did exactly that and more, as it left the crowd wildly cheering each performance and asking for more!

Airtel country manager Vikram Sinha told the audience that their business focuses on changing lives, either directly through their telecommunications services, or through corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities.

“One of our key priorities in CSR has been employee involvement. This has also been a key component of the Dreams Charity show trend that Airtel Seychelles has set. Employees are encouraged to be involved, put in time and effort towards giving back to the community it serves,” he said.

The company celebrated 14 years in Seychelles as from midnight that day, and Mr Sinha said there was no better way to celebrate this and informed the audience that all funds raised will be given to the vocational unit of the disabled council.

In the midst of poem recitals and sketches, there were also dance and song performances. Local artists such as Patrick Victor, Joe Samy, Thomas Knowles, Robert Chetty, John and Simon Lajoie, David Andre, Jean-Marc Volcy and more were also there to spice up the event.

There was also a fashion show depicting the 21 national costumes of the countries the company operates in. Christmas songs led to the conclusion of the event, which ended with all joining in for the inspiring song We are the world, led by Jean-Marc Volcy, Antoinette Dodin, Airtel staff and friends.
Our selection of photos show some highlights of the event.
