Dead marshal prompts court to detain ship |04 January 2013

A magistrate’s court has ordered a post-mortem to be done on the dead marshal’s body to determine the cause of death.

The ship – the Shyan Chynang 8 – whose last port of call was Mauritius, arrived yesterday with the body and the crew apparently wanted to set sail again and continue fishing, but police yesterday made an application to the Supreme Court to detain the vessel until the circumstances of the death are clear.

Judge Duncan Gaswaga ordered the ship to be detained in port until this afternoon when the police will have established whether or not there was foul play in the death of the Sri Lankan man.

There were apparently two other armed marshals on the ship when the man died.
