Day of celebration for local sports governing body |22 January 2013

Day of celebration for local sports governing body

Although the 30th anniversary date was last year, it’s only this week that the NSC is organising a series of activities to celebrate the event, seen as a milestone in the development of sports in Seychelles.

Today’s main event is the opening of an exhibition tracing the progress of Seychellois sportsmen and women in local, regional, continental and international competitions.

The opening ceremony of the exhibition is slated for 10am and during the same event, long serving employers will be rewarded and top sponsors will be acknowledged.

The NSC will also launch its sports ambassadors programme. This will be followed by an address by NSC board chairman Jean Larue and the launch of the website. Then the visitors will start viewing the exhibition.

According to the NSC, the Seychelles sports ambassadors are the most outstanding sports leaders in the country. They have achieved a lot in the international arena and have the ability to engage young people in sports.

The sports ambassadors are selected due to their sporting talent, and more importantly, due to their exceptional commitment and ability as leaders or volunteers.

The sports ambassadors programme aims to inspire young athletes and provide them with skills that support their involvement in sports from the school environment through to adulthood. It seeks to develop leaders and volunteers further by providing them with the responsibility of being an ambassador for sports.

A sports ambassador's role is to:
• increase participation and healthy lifestyles in schools and in the country,
• promote the positive values of sports in and through sports,
• be a role model in advocating physical education and sports,
• be the people's voice on physical education and sports in schools and communities
How it works:

• Schools, Districts, Youth Council or Clubs identify opportunities to use the sports ambassadors to motivate their members by listening to or seeing people who have succeeded in their respective sports due to commitment, sacrifice and hard work.

• Schools contact the National Sports Council to discuss these opportunities. The appropriate sports director identifies and organises for an ambassador to visit, notifies the school and coordinates the visit.

• The sports ambassadors provide workshops/seminars or talks that involve interaction with students or athletes so that they can learn from the ambassadors and acquire skills that will help them with their sport choices.
Sports ambassadors are:

1. All Sportsmen and Sportswomen of the Year

2. Other outstanding sports persons before the sports awards programme was introduced or those whose nature of their sports made it difficult for them to win the sportsman and sportswoman titles.

3. Sports persons who have reached international standard from other pillars of sports like officiating, coaching and administration.
