Exhibition showcases 30 years of progress in Seychelles sports

Mr Larue addressing guests at yesterday’s ceremony

Mr Larue was addressing guests yesterday during the launch of an exhibition at Stad Linite, showcasing various achievements of local sports over the past 30 years.

The exhibition is part of activities to commemorate the council’s 30th anniversary celebrations.

The launch was attended by Social Affairs, Community Development and Sports Minister Vincent Meriton, community development and sports principal secretary Denis Rose, Seychelles Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association (Socga) president Antonio Gopal, past sports leaders and administrators and also various personalities who have contributed in one way or another in the local sports’ development.

Also at yesterday’s ceremony, Minister Meriton launched the council’s new website www.seynsc.com.
Mr Larue said the NSC has continuously looked at ways and means to improve its services and how it carries out various programmes.

He explained that over the years, the NSC has changed its structures to meet the many challenges facing sports.

This, he said, include innovative programmes and state-of-the-art facilities which have been developed to respond to the needs of sports federations and enthusiasts of all age groups.

“The setting up of the sports medicine unit, water sports centre and sports shop were some of the value-added facilities and services put at the disposal of athletes and federations,” he added.

These facilities, he said, provide opportunities for people from all walks of life to enjoy and take part in various activities for leisure, recreation or competition.

He also noted that with the decentralisation process, many districts have benefited from multi-purpose courts and other facilities.

At international level, Mr Larue said the NSC has been instrumental in preparing and supporting athletes to take part in major Games.

“Much resource has been allocated to ensure our athletes perform and compete to the best of their abilities,” added Mr Larue.

He further noted that to ensure professional training, the NSC has recruited foreign coaches who are working alongside their local counterparts.

He also said hosting major Games has provided the NSC staff with opportunities to build the capacities and improve their organisational capabilities.

Set up in May 1982, the NSC was enacted as the supreme body to coordinate sports in the country, with the mission to generally support, boost and ease the needs of athletes, other individuals and sports organisations in the pursuit of achieving excellence in sports, while promoting a healthy lifestyle.

It has worked jointly with various public organisations, the community, schools, the Socga, sporting federations, sponsors, officials, athletes and the media.
