Campaign against gender violence-Public urged to wear orange today as a show of unity |25 January 2013

Orange day is celebrated globally on the 25th day of every month with the aim of raising public awareness and increasing the political will towards ending the global pandemic of violence against women and girls around the world.

The campaign’s vision is to achieve a world free from violence and the threat of violence. This can only be realised through the involvement of all members of governments, non-governmental organisations and citizens of every nation.

According to a communiqué from the Ministry of Social Affairs, Community Development and Sports, violence is on the rise in our homes, workplaces and even in our schools.

The consequences of such acts against women and girls are vast and widespread, as they affect not only the victims of such violence, but their families as they weaken the bonds that tie them together, can cause deviant behaviour which contributes to social disorder and conflict within communities, and disrupts harmony in our small society.

In commemoration of this global event, orange is worn to represent the campaign to end violence against women.

Members of the public are being asked to support this endeavour by wearing orange today and on the 25th day of each month. This way they will help spread the word about the campaign so that everyone can in his/her own way start making a difference in our society and contribute to our nation’s social renaissance.
