National theme steering committee holds first meeting

The committee during its first meeting

The working group appointed by President James Michel and chaired by the Minister for Labour and Human Resource Development, Idith Alexander, discussed ways to coordinate promotional programmes and activities under this year’s theme, Striving for our Seychelles.

In her welcoming address to the members of the committee, Minister Alexander reminded all that President Michel’s decision to the carry the national theme for 2012 into 2013 underlines the point that work should be reinforced to educate and encourage Seychellois that hard work should be motivated by virtues such as patriotism, discipline and respect.

“We should work not only for our personal success but for the benefit of the country as a whole,” she said.

Minister Alexander encouraged members to come up with innovative and smarter work approaches so as to consolidate on last year’s work, inspire and motivate the public at large and reinforce public consciousness on the importance of a strong and productive nation.

She called for greater collaboration and efforts of all so that national goals towards the building of the New Seychelles are reached collectively.

Members agreed that activities relevant to the national theme should be organised both at organisational and national level, by both the government and the private sector.

They also stressed that the activities should be incorporated in the existing activities such as theme days.
The first activity of the committee will be a two-day fair and exhibition on the national theme to be held tomorrow and on Saturday.

Among other topics discussed at the meeting were a calendar of activities and a schedule of meetings.
The committee will meet on a monthly basis.
