Electoral commission starts work on Elections Act

The Electoral Refrom Forum during its sitting yesterday

Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Hendrick Gappy, said this yesterday during the first sitting of the Electoral Reform Forum for this year which started with presentations from representatives of political parties at the National House.

Yesterday’s session comprised presentations from political party representatives on the Political Party Act and an update on the Public Order Act.
Mr Gappy pointed out that the Office of the Electoral Commission is waiting to comment on the government’s amendments on the Public Order Act before it is issued as a bill. In the meantime, the Office of the Electoral Commission will continue its work on the drafting of the Elections Act.

Representatives from the Seychelles National Party (SNP) and the New Democratic Party (NDP) delivered their presentations on the Political Party Act (Registration & Regulation Act), while the representative of Parti Lepep had some questions and clarifications. Representatives from the Popular Democratic Movement (PDM) and Parti Lepep (PL) have said they will forward their presentations in writing to the Office of the Electoral Commission.

SNP and NDP presentations focused on the registration of political parties, specifically the issue of the number of members for the application of registration for political parties, allocation of seats, appeal against refusal to register, financing of political parties and support funds, accounts and audit and registration of alliances.

The Office of the Electoral Commission will ensure that comments and feedback from all parties and the general public will be incorporated as has been the case with the Public Order Act and the Elections Act.

The Political Party Act (Registration & Regulation Act) was last revised in 1996.
The forum will resume its session on Wednesday February 27 from 9am at the National House and the members will continue with their presentations on the Political Party Act.
