Handball: Challenge Cup-Mont Fleuri Storm retain title, AC Brothers renew with success |26 February 2013

In Sunday’s final of the opening season competition played at the Palais des Sports, Nathalie Samynadin got seven goals, Marie-Claire Chetty six and young Queeny Hertel five in Mont Fleuri Storm’s 25-10 victory over Au Cap Sisters, formerly Royal Queens.

Defending Mohan Shopping Centre-sponsored league champions MF Storm led 11-3 at half-time against an Au Cap Sisters team who had many players limping off the court injured.
The men’s title has been won by a rejuvenated AC Brothers side against Super 8 who had dominated the game over the last three years.

Coach Tony Hortère has been able to persuade players like Stan Tomking and Steven André, who played big roles in the team’s past successes, to play handball again and the result is a first title.

Against league champions Super 8 who were gunning to retain the Challenge Cup, AC Brothers won 32-27 to celebrate a first title win in almost five years.
Meanwhile, handball action will be at the Palais des Sports again this coming Saturday with the two curtain-raiser matches.

The defending champions of the curtain-raiser matches disputed by the previous year’s league and Seychelles Handball Federation (SHF) Cup winners are Mont Fleuri Storm (women) and Super 8 (men) and it will be interesting to see if they can add this piece of silverware to their trophy cabinets.

Last year, Mont Fleuri Storm beat Royal Queens 28-18 and they will meet the same team, now called Au Cap Sisters, on Saturday at 1pm.
The men’s match will be between league champions Super 8 and SHF Cup winners Young Eagles at 3pm.

In last year’s men’s match, Super 8 distanced themselves from PLS Hurricanes in the second period to earn a 45-34 victory in what looked likely to be a tight game.
