Seychelles gets non-resident high commissioner to Mozambique

Mr Morel with President Guebuza during his accreditation visit

During the discussions held, Mr Morel conveyed President James Michel’s appreciation for the exemplary leadership President Guebuza has been providing to the Southern African Development Community (SADC) since assuming the chair of the regional organisation in August 2012.

The exchange of views focused on the dynamics of regional integration, the upcoming SADC council of ministers early next month in Maputo, as well as the mediation efforts under way to resolve the political crisis in Madagascar and the holding of transparent, fair and credible presidential, legislative and local elections in the sister island country during the course of this year as outlined by the SADC road map.

President Guebuza was informed of the decision of the Indian Ocean Commission to establish a liaison office in Antananarivo to accompany the on-going electoral process.

It should be recalled that earlier this year, Seychelles’ Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that high commissioner Morel is to be stationed at this office for the duration of the elections. The office will operate in close collaboration with the SADC officials already on the ground there.

Speaking on his visit to Mozambique, the high commissioner expressed his optimism for the future bilateral relations between the two countries which, he said, will receive a boost with the signing of two agreements – one on double taxation avoidance, and the other on cooperation in the field of tourism in the near future.
High commissioner Morel is currently based in the Seychelles high commission in Pretoria, South Africa.
