Gender commission reacts to alleged ‘gang rape’ |01 March 2013

In a press release, the commission says that this horrendous act has brought “shock and disgust” among parties that are striving to end violence against women.
“This incident is a fundamental violation of women’s basic human rights, including the right to bodily integrity,” says the release.

“Violence against women is defined as any act of gender based violence that results or is likely to result in physical, sexual or mental harm or suffering to women, including threats of such acts, coercion or arbitrary deprivation of liberty, whether occurring in public or in private life,” the release notes.

“The gender commission of Lungos wishes to express its disappointment of such vile behaviour and hopes that the law will be optimally applied to the alleged perpetrators. The civil society will follow the development of the case to the end,” says the release.

The gender commission has also congratulated whoever brought the case to the attention of the police. “It is an indication that people are beginning to acknowledge sexual violence as a violation of human rights,” says the gender commission release.

The commission is urging the public to bring such kind of sexual violence to the attention of the authorities concerned, as in this case.
“The civil society will continue to institute programmes in educating the public on human rights issues,” adds the press release.
