Patel, who is also Caf vice-president and was a former Seychelles Football Federation chairman, was re-elected during the Caf congress held last Sunday in Morocco.

The other seat from the southern African region was won by Madagascar’s Ahmad, who beat South African Danny Jordaan in a runoff.

During the congress, Cameroonian Issa Hayatou was re-elected Caf president unopposed, extending to almost three decades his tenure in charge of African football.
This is 66-year-old Hayatou’s seventh consecutive term in office and he has vowed to step down by the end of the new four-year mandate.

Mr Hayatou also received from Fédération Internationale de Football Association (Fifa) president Sepp Blatter a special certificate to commemorate his 25 years at the helm of the Caf.
Fifa executive committee member Jacques Anouma was barred from being a candidate to lead African football, losing his legal challenge to stand for election against Hayatou.

Mali’s Amadou Diakite, who was banned for two years in November 2010 by Fifa after being found guilty of bribery, also retained his place after an overwhelming win.

Benin Football Federation chairman Moucharafou Anjorin, who spent six months in jail in Cotonou following allegations of embezzling sponsorship money, defeated Nigerian Football Federation president Aminu Maigari in a runoff for one of the West African berths.

Mohamed Raouraoua was unanimously re-elected to head the northern zone, Sudanese Magdi Sham el Din was also re-elected as the central and eastern representative and Djibrine Adoum of Chad was given another vote of confidence to guide the central zone.
