Karting- Top contenders take wins in first round |15 March 2013

Although there were delays because of the rain, the races of the first of the 10-round championships ended successfully.
The first race of the day was the SF3 class and Marc Delcy made good progress in the slippery conditions to take a comfortable win. Damien Bonnelame was second and Roland Delcy was not too far behind in third place.

Last year’s champion Peter Fred looked a little rusty, but he must not be underestimated as he finished fourth ahead of Dane Decommarmond. Redman Bonnelame took sixth position with Marvin Sophie seventh. Andrew Gabriel, who is new to this class, was in the hunt for a good position, but experienced mechanical problems with his kart forcing him join the race after the third lap.
In the SF1 class, David Rene set a new lap record of 25.99 seconds during the heats in dry conditions to win ahead of Liza Rene-Cosgrow who has just returned to the sport after a 16-month break.
There was disappointment for the Simons – father John and son Stephan – whose karts failed to start as a result of flat batteries.

Chan Decommarmond took his first win ahead of Debra Mellon in the SF4 category, while newly promoted Rodney Salome, the 2012 junior Champion, finished third. Rennick Bonnelame had a bad start with a non-finish in the final while both Michael Padayachy and Mitra Labrosse were absent.

In the day’s final race – the SF Ladies class – Liza Rene-Cosgrow made a triumphant return, winning the class from last year’s champion Debra Mellon who settled for second place.
Bernadette Mein made a strong start to the season as she held on to second position for most of the race but only lost out after misunderstanding a marshal’s signal. She slowed down and only finished third.

Shirin Azemia, a young girl promoted from the Junior class, drove very well to take fourth place and had it not been for the slippery conditions, she would have surprised a few.
The next round will be the Junior class tomorrow.
