Record-breaking Eden Island golf classic a massive success!

Some 70+ golfers assembled last Saturday to compete in teams of two for the honour of being crowned Eden Island golf classic champions. And what a classic it was!

Played under a better ball stableford format, SGC members, employees of Eden Island Development Company and Eden Island residents signed up to compete in teams of two over 18 holes. The blistering heat did not melt the spirits of the golfers as the sponsors ensured that each player received a brand new cap, a polo shirt and a set of new balls before tee off, as well as cold beverages on the course and a delicious lunch at the club house.

However, it was the spectacular prizes on offer that really caught the attention of the players, including high quality, battery operated golf trolleys, state-of-the-art range finders, iPods, dinners for two, hampers and many more.

The golf itself was hotly contested from the start with a number of pairings posting excellent front nine scores. In particular, the teams of Patrick Asba/Alix Esparon, Patrick Balette/Georges Barbot and Francis Mondon/Theo Hansen were the early pacesetters and it was clear that the other teams would have to come out swinging on the back nine to catch these boys.

Mondon and Hansen quickly fell off the pace, however, unable to match their front nine score of 24 points. However, Balette and Barbot returned another brilliant back nine score and looked like sure winners with a total of 46 points before Asba and Esparon signed for an amazing 47 points, edging them out by a single point!

Craig Heeger, chairman of the Board at Eden Island, was on hand to present the winners with their impressive prizes and went on to confirm Eden Island’s future commitment to golf in Seychelles with an even bigger and better tournament planned for 2014.

The Eden Island Development Company has already donated a brand new fairway mower to the SGC this year and has recently provided hands-on help to improve the course. A wonderful day was capped off with a scrumptious barbeque dinner for golfers and guests alike catered for by the sponsors.

The Eden Island golf classic was a resounding success and most certainly the golf tournament of the year thus far!
