The Open and Distance Learning (ODL) mobile learning development training is being held at the International Conference Centre and is a joint initiative between the Seychelles Agricultural Agency (SAA) and Commonwealth of Leaning (COL).

During the past five years, COL has been focusing on the ODL development processes, especially in reaching agricultural sector through an initiative called the Lifelong Learning for Farmers (L3F).

COL aims to help Seychelles in introducing mobile phone based extension through L3F approach which uses information and communication technologies such as mobile phones, to strengthen the learning process among extension officers and farmers and to create a link between various partners.

At the end of the workshop, those taking part, who include heads and staff of the SAA sections, and representatives of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Industry, are expected to be well equipped with knowledge on the new approach and be engaged in delivering more professional services to the farmers.

The workshop was officially launched by the Minister for Natural Resources and Industry Peter Sinon in the presence of principal secretary for natural resources and industry Michel Nalletamby, chief executive of the SAA Marc Naiken, representatives from COL, who are leading the training, and from telecommunications firm Airtel.
In his speech, Mr Sinon said all is being done to push the agricultural sector forward.

The training programme will enable agricultural advisers to effectively executive their duties and enhance their capacity to face challenges affecting the farming community, especially the small farmers.

Mr Sinon said the government will continue to invest in this sector and his ministry pledges to continue putting resources to upgrade capabilities and capacities.

Topics to be covered during the workshop include the principles of ODL content development, development of text messages for ODL, development of audio scripts for audio content development.
During the training, delegates will also come up with an action plan and discuss the way forward together.
