Basketball: Curtain-raiser competition- Hawks book final spot

Solomon (dribbling) drives past SyllaNigerian Alao Solomon was instrumental in the Hawks’ 89-76 win, scoring a game-high 35 points against Premium Cobras in the first semifinal on Monday at Victoria Gymnasium.
The Hawks won the first three quarters 25-19, 17-11 and 25-24, but were tied 22-22 in the fourth.

Solomon was helped in offence by centre Rodney Lozé with 16 points as the Hawks, who dethroned 2011 winners Premium Cobras with an 83-60 victory for the title in last year’s final, booked their ticket for another trip to the final.

Playmaker Steven Servina paced the Cobras with 30 points and power forward Amadou Sylla added 23 in a lost cause.
After making a clean sweep of all the titles last year, it will be interesting to see if PLS Hawks, who also beat Angels (91-69) and Drifters (88-51) in the earlier matches, will start the 2013 season on the same good note as they started the last.

Only the winners of today’s other semifinal will have the answer for us come Saturday April 6 when the final will be played at 5pm at Victoria Gymnasium.
Baya and MBU Rockers clash today to decide who get the honour of facing the indomitable Hawks.

The Rockers started the competition with a 125-29 victory against Juniors before earning a 76-35 win against Razors in the quarterfinal.

As for Baya, they dispatched Cascade Bullets 100-46 and posted a 66-47 victory over Mont Fleuri Dawgz in their matches on the way to the semifinals.
Meanwhile, the first women’s finalists were to be known last night when Anse Etoile Stars met HotShots.

Defending champions Mont Fleuri will play Juniors in the other last-four clash tomorrow.

Mont Fleuri snatched a last-second 66-65 win against HotShots in last year’s final to replace Anse Etoile Stars as the women’s Curtain-raiser champions.

The women’s final is scheduled for Saturday April 6 at 3pm at Victoria Gymnasium.
