Workers gather en masse for labour day sports and fun

Organised by the National Sports Council (NSC), the event saw workers from ministries, government departments, private companies, and more turn up for the event.

Speaking to Seychelles Nation, director for sports for all within the NSC Francis Remie said the event is part of the social renaissance programme and aims to bring together all work organisations.
“We want to promote the concept of sports and health at workplaces and by bringing them together here, we have the aspect of competition, as well as promoting a healthy lifestyle by doing sports,” he said.

The event had sports like football, volleyball, basketball and road races. Children of those who turned up were also catered for, with a playground installed on the field, with toys and games like stilts, swings, see-saws, and more.

“We also had competitive games for the children who wanted to take their playfulness and abilities to the next level,” he said.

Among those taking part were a sports team from the Les Canelles wellness centre, which is a rehabilitation centre for young people abusing narcotics.

Mr Remie said in line with the social renaissance campaign, they are also showing young people from rehab centres that they can have sports without drugs, and also the benefits of drug-free sports.
In the afternoon, there was also a musical show, with local artists performing.

Mr Remie said the NSC is very satisfied with the turnout, adding that the next such activity will be an athletics event for all workers on June 15 and after that there will be other follow-up activities such as beach fiesta.

“We will also have a sports league for workplaces due to be put in place soon and we will ask work organisations to register,” he said.
