Twelve cyclists from three clubs – Eco cycling club, Journey cycling club and St Francis – took part in the race – the ninth of the season – contested last Sunday.

The race started near the Flower Box shop at the Pirates Arm’s building and the cyclists made their way to south Mahe through the east coast up to Takamaka, Anse Boileau and Montagne Posée before once again riding along the east coast plateau to head to Bel Ombre via Anse Etoile. At Bel Ombre, they made a U-turn to head to Beau Vallon and to the finish line at Glacis.

Francis Louis crossed the finish line along with teammate Dominique to ensure a one-two finish for Eco cycling club. They both were credited with the same time of 2 hours 40 minutes 46 seconds (2h40:46). Ahmad Arissol of Journey cycling club finished in third place with a time of 2h42:42.

The race was in honour of former national team coach Ricky Watts who passed away in late December 2005 and it was being sponsored by and former cyclist Jeffrey Delorie.

Born in Madras, India, Mr Watts was a former soldier with the Royal Navy in England, came to Seychelles on November 29, 1977. He joined Seychelles cycling in the early 1980s and in 1987 became a member of the Seychelles Cycling Association. He was a very active member and in 1988 took over the job of national team coach.

His wife Annette Watts and Mr Delorie presented the cyclists with their prizes.
