Seychelles extends condolences to UN staff in Somalia attack |22 June 2013

In a letter of sympathy, President Michel extended the support of the people and government of Seychelles to the UN staff and condemned the terrorist act:

“Seychelles unreservedly condemns this brutal and barbaric attack. It is an act of blatant terrorism and a desperate attempt to counteract the good work that the UN is doing in promoting peace, stability, and sustainable development in Somalia.

“Seychelles is supportive of the important role that the UN is playing in Somalia and offers our solidarity to all UN staff and other partners involved there at this difficult time.”
The President concluded by extending his sympathies to the victims and their families.

Islamist militants carried out a deadly assault on the main UN compound in the Somali capital on Wednesday, dealing a blow to fragile security gains that have allowed a slow return of foreign aid workers and diplomats.

The assault, claimed by Islamist group al Shabaab, killed 22 people.
