Retailer fined R30,500 for breaking law |05 July 2013

The case was heard before the Board of Commissioners on March 20, 2013 where the following breaches were not contested by Sekaar @ Takamaka (Pty) Ltd:

• Displaying for sale goods with labels that were not showing information in an understandable language of the Republic of Seychelles (Section 19(1)(b) of the Consumer Protection Act, 2010);

• Displaying goods for sale without showing to consumers a price in relation to those goods (section 20(1) of the Consumer Protection Act, 2010);

• Requiring customers to pay a higher price for goods than the displayed price (Section 21(1)(a) of the Consumer Protection Act, 2010);

• Offering to supply and displaying goods at a date later than its expiry date (Section 24(1) of the Consumer Protection Act, 2010); and

• Displaying for sale eight canned goods which failed to meet the general safety requirements (Section 50 (1)(a) of the Consumer Protection Act, 2010).

The enforcement of the Consumer Protection Act on Sekaar @ Takamaka (Pty) Ltd was initiated by the Commission following an inspection undertaken by its officers at the retailer’s premises.
