South Sudan Red Cross formally recognised |06 July 2013

The decision was adopted on June 18, 2013 and recognition took effect on the same date, bringing to 189 the number of national societies that are components of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.

The South Sudan Red Cross applied for recognition on October 10, 2012. In support of its application, it submitted various documents to the ICRC: among them, the text of its constitution as adopted on October 5, 2012, a report on its activities for the period 2010-2012, and a copy of the South Sudan Red Cross Society Act of 2012 (signed by the president of the Republic of South Sudan on March 9, 2012). The Act, which refers to the 1949 Geneva Conventions and to the Fundamental Principles of the Movement, recognises the South Sudan Red Cross as an independent voluntary aid society, auxiliary to the public authorities in the humanitarian field, and as the only national society in the Republic of South Sudan.

The documents submitted were examined by the Joint ICRC/lnternational Federation Commission for National Society Statutes. They showed that the ten conditions for recognition of a new national society by the ICRC had been fulfilled.

Representatives of the ICRC and of the International Federation visited the National Society and ascertained that it had a structure enabling it to engage, throughout the national territory, in the following spheres of activity: health care, disaster management and conflict preparedness and response, as well as communication and dissemination of the history of the Movement, the Fundamental Principles, the rules on the protection of the emblem and international humanitarian law.

An independent State since July 9, 2011, the Republic of South Sudan acceded to the four Geneva Conventions of August 12, 1949 and to their Additional Protocols I and II (of June 8, 1977) and Ill (of December 8, 2005) on January 25, 2013.
