Volleyball: Kokonet and Space 95 leagues-Friends move to the top, BSA Spikers fail to turn up

Friends (to the left of the net) have pulled level on points with Cascade

Friends faced Praslin Volleyball Club (PVC) at the La Promenade Gymnasium last weekend and they outclassed their opponents in the first set which they won 25-14.

PVC put up more of a fight in the second set though they lost 21-25. Friends put the game to bed in the third set with a 25-16 win for a 3-0 score after one hour of play.

With the win, Friends are now level on points – 16 – with second-placed Cascade, but lead the table by virtue of a better set difference – +11 (17 for and 6 against) – compared to Cascade’s +10 (15 for and 5 against).

In the women’s Kokonet division two league, Mont Fleuri claimed a hard fought victory over Ephelia Resorts in a match that lasted one hour 35 minutes. After winning the first set 25-22, Mont Fleuri somehow lost concentration to drop the second 9-25 and also the third 13-25.

Sensing defeat, Mont Fleuri got their act together to tie the game at two sets apiece with a 25-23 fourth-set win and they also won the decisive fifth set 15-11.

With 22 points from six wins and four defeats, the Mont Fleurians are second in the nine-team standings behind leaders Saints United of Praslin who have 25 points (eight wins and one loss).

In the other women’s bottom division match, Bel Ombre needed one hour 11 minutes to win 3-1 (25-13, 25-11, 13-25, 25-13) against St Louis Bombers.

Meanwhile, both Kokonet league division two men’s matches scheduled for last weekend were not played as Praslin-based BSA Spikers failed to travel to Mahé. Airwaves and Juniors thus won by walk-over in the six-team table dominated by GAP Boyz who are unbeaten in six games with 18 points.
