Table Tennis: Monthly Challenge-Sinon retains women’s title, Sultan wins the men’s |19 July 2013

Sinon finished the ladies’ division one as the winner after easily defeating Zahira Khattab in the final. Sinon had won the June challenge and was looking to make it two in a row when she lined up against Khattab in the final. She proved too strong for her opponent as she dominated and won 4-0 (11-4, 11-6, 11-8, 11-5) to retain her title. Lana Robert finished in third place.
In the men’s division one, it was Godfrey Sultan who took home the title ahead of Achille Dodin.

In the final, Dodin started strongly, getting the better of Sultan in the first (11-9). Sultan bounced back to win three sets in a row (11-9, 11-8 and 11-6) to take a 3-1 lead. Dodin reduced the arrears to one set with an 11-8 fifth-set win, but Sultan put an end to the best-of-seven game with an 11-9 victory in the sixth set for a 4-2 win.
Last month’s losing finalist Nicholas Esther had to settle for third place this time.

The boys’ division two final was a repeat of last month’s with Darius Thomas facing Dorian Banane. Banane might have been looking for revenge, but he fell short as Thomas won 3-1. The set scores were 11-8, 9-11, 11-8 and 11-7. Yves Camille finished third.

Nahilla Volcère was the winner in the girls’ division two, but she had to fight hard to resist the challenge of Ketty Lespoir in the final. The closely fought game finished 3-2 (11-6, 11-8, 7-11, 9-11, 11-4). Shanie Leon was placed third.

Dylan Siméon managed to retain his division three title for boys as he came from two sets down to win 3-2 against Hugo Ichler in the final. After losing the first two sets 7-11 and 11-13, Siméon showed great character to come back and win the next three sets 13-11, 11-4 and 11-8 respectively. In third place was last month’s finalist Mael Youpa.

In the girls’ division three it was Kim Hoareau who won after defeating Nisha Belmont 3-2 in the final. It was a hard fought victory for Hoareau who lost the first set 9-11, before winning the next two 11-6 and 11-9. Hoareau let Belmont pull level at two sets apiece with an 11-9 fourth-set win before regaining her composure to take the last set 11-8 to win the match. Emma Bristol had to settle for third place.
