‘Drivers have big role to play in alleviating congestion’ |22 October 2013

While authorities work to improve traffic flow in the town centre and its environs, it is clear that drivers themselves need a bit more self-discipline and cooperation to ensure that this happens.

A communiqué from the Ministry of Home Affairs and Transport notes that a lot of drivers violate traffic regulations which in turn create congestion.

For example, it is quite a common sight to find a vehicle parked in a ‘no parking’ area, indicated either by a road traffic sign or by double yellow lines painted on the road.

Another violation involves drivers in enclosed vans or trucks who leave their vehicles in restricted parking areas, not to unload or load merchandise or other goods, but rather to sell items to the public.  “This activity becomes an issue, causing congestion, stress to others, and as well placing an unsuspecting consumer in danger or at risk of being hit by another vehicle while

attempting to maneuver in an area congested with pedestrians,” notes the communiqué.

“So while both the Seychelles Land Transport Agency and the Road Transport Department work to improve traffic circulation and parking, it is clear that everyone will as well be better served if drivers take the time to do their part when using the roads -- that is by abiding by parking and driving regulations. Doing so makes our roads just a little bit safer and easier to drive on,” adds the communiqué.
