Fair trading body and partners learn more about competition law |24 October 2013

The Fair Trading Commission (FTC) is hosting a four-day workshop on the enforcement of the Fair Competition Act 2009.
Robert Lancop and Andre Brantz from the competition law associates in Canada are leading the sessions being held at the Seychelles Trading Company’s conference room.

Present at the official opening on Monday were President of the Court of Appeal Francis Mcgregor, Minister for Finance, Trade and Investment Pierre Laporte and representatives of key partners.

FTC’s chief executive George Tirant said it is important for such an organisation which administers the consumers and competition laws to enhance capacity building in those laws.

He added that it is also vital for FTC to work in close collaboration with its partners such as Central Bank, National Assembly, department of information communications technology, Attorney General’s office − which are also being represented in the training − for them to understand these laws.

Mr Tirant added that this will help its staff to carry out effective investigations and to detect breaches of the competition law.

The training has been formulated in order to cater to sector regulators that also play a role in the maintenance of a competitive market.

Its main aim is to provide sector regulators an understanding into the application of the competition law and the investigation procedures of the commission which will ease cooperation, exchange of information and enforcement measures between the commission and sector regulators when dealing with breaches of the fair Competition Act 2009.

Topics being covered during the four days include cartels, bid rigging, mergers, dawn raids and abuse of dominance cases.
