Fishing builds stronger bond between father and son |25 October 2013

Fishing is big source of income here in Seychelles; a lot of people practice this activity for business as well as for pleasure.

For Jayden Benoiton, an eight-year-old boy who is in Primary 3, going fishing is the opportunity for him to spend quality time with his father as a bonding activity between father and son.

Jayden lives with his mum and dad at Anse Aux Pins; his dad, Hubert Benoiton and he have made a tradition for them to go fishing at Anse à la Mouche every October as at this particular time sharks come up close to the beach.

Recently they went out fishing at their usual place at Anse à la Mouche, not far from the home of Jayden’s grandparents. Jayden was over the moon when he caught a shark and he was so proud of his catch that his mum cooked the fish the next day.

According to research from the University of Iowa, infants who have a close, intimate relationship with a parent are less likely to be troubled, aggressive or experience other emotional and behavioural problems when they reach school age.

Surprisingly, the researchers found that a young child needs to feel particularly secure with only one parent to reap the benefits of stable emotions and behaviour, and that being attached to dad is just as helpful as being close to mom.

There are different activities that a parent can do for bond building with his or her child. Why not fishing? It is messy and fun but it helps build patience in a person.
