Two suspected drug traffickers arrested |30 October 2013

Praslin agents of the National Drugs Enforcement Agency (NDEA) have arrested a male at his home in Cote d’Or.

The 29-year-old handyman was found in possession of a large quantity of a substance suspected to be herbal cannabis weighing approximately 170 grammes.

The accused, who was arrested last Friday, appeared in the Magistrates Court on Monday this week and is being remanded in custody until November 4.

Also on Monday this week following an NDEA surveillance operation in the Belvedere area, a 27-year-old unemployed man was arrested for selling what is suspected to be controlled drugs from the house of a relative.

When confronted by NDEA agents the suspect swallowed a quantity of suspected controlled drugs and attempted to dispose of the remainder by throwing it through a hole in a wall.

The man was abusive and resisted arrest; he also refused medical assistance.

The substance recovered from the scene is believed to be heroin weighing approximately 11 grammes and has been sent for forensic analysis.

On conviction through the courts, trafficking controlled drugs carries a heavy sentence under the Misuse of Drugs Act with a maximum 30 years imprisonment and a R500,000 fine.

The NDEA would like to encourage the continued support of members of the public in the fight to combat illegal drugs. All sources are treated with the utmost discretion and your anonymity is assured. (NDEA Hotline numbers to call are 2781 450 and 2781451)
