CBS to host 19th anniversary lecture |11 November 2013

The Central Bank of Seychelles (CBS) will be hosting the 19th lecture in its series of anniversary lectures on Friday November 29, 2013.

It will take place at the International Conference Centre starting at 5pm and shall be attended by invited guests and the general public.

The theme for this year's lecture is ‘Buttressing Seychelles’ Financial Sector – Embracing Globalisation whilst preserving our Specificities.’

In recent years, emphasis has been placed on the country’s development of the financial sector, supported by a sound legal framework so as to eventually turn it into a solid pillar of the economy. In addition to improving growth prospects, the theme highlights the need for Seychelles’ financial sector to remain resilient to the increasingly globalised economic environment.

The guest speaker for this year’s lecture is Ajith Nivard Cabraal, governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL), who has been chosen given the similarities between the two economies and the technical help received from the CBSL in relation to the deepening of our financial sector.

Under Mr Cabraal’s governorship Sri Lanka has been able to maintain sound and stable macro-economic fundamentals, with inflation contained at low levels while financial stability has been achieved during periods of severe global uncertainties and turmoil. Moreover, the Sri Lankan economy has been transformed into a safe and stable investment destination as well as a middle income emerging economy.

It is hoped that the knowledge and experience shared by the guest speaker will encourage discussions among the audience on the conditions required to improve financial sector efficiency and competitiveness as well as to increase the range of financial services that are available in Seychelles without compromising the soundness of the system.
