Environment minister discusses biodiversity and renewable energy issues with diplomats |11 November 2013

Possibilities for cooperation and exchanges in the fields of tertiary education, biodiversity, marine resources and renewable energy between Seychelles, Tanzania and the United States of America were discussed last week.

This was when Environment and Energy Minister Rolph Payet met and held talks with the newly accredited high commissioner for Tanzania to Seychelles Batilda Salha Burian and the deputy chief of mission for the US Embassy in Mauritius and Seychelles Susan Falatko.

Minister Payet said Dr Burian expressed the need for Seychelles and Tanzania to work together towards the blue economy.

“Seychelles could share its knowledge in ocean conservation and Tanzania could share its knowledge in the area of energy such as in coastal and offshore gas,” said Professor Payet.

The setting up of an American Corner at the University of Seychelles was the main topic of talks between Professor Payet, in his capacity as pro-chancellor of the University of Seychelles, and Mrs Falatko.

This project is being fully funded by the US government and will also include free access to electronic library and other resources for students and lecturers.

Professor Payet conveyed his appreciation to the Clinton Foundation for its support in the field of waste management, waste to energy and its help in developing the sector.

Seychelles established diplomatic ties with the Republic of Tanzania in November 1986, and relations with the United States of America in June 1976.
