International Men’s Day |19 November 2013

Men and boys urged to reflect on their lives

The Minister for Social Affairs, Community Development and Sports Vincent Meriton has urged men and boys to think of the consequences of their actions as they not only have repercussions on themselves but on that of their families, communities and our country as a whole.

This comes in Minister Meriton’s message on the occasion of the International Men’s Day today.

The full text of Minister Meriton’s message reads:

“On November 19, men and women around the globe celebrate International Men’s Day. This year’s theme is ‘Keeping men and boys safe’. This theme resonates well on the local scene as it brings focus to the fact that our boys and men are being outperformed in society, particularly in school and at work. Hence there is a necessity for our boys and men to be educated to make them more aware and more productive. By keeping men and boys safe the whole of society stands to benefit as this will create greater social cohesion and harmony. Each one of us can contribute in ensuring a safe and healthy environment for our boys and men.

“Over the years the main objective of International Men’s Day has been to promote positive male role models, celebrate men’s positive contribution and improve gender relations. Today is also a day whereby we acknowledge the important roles that men play in their families, communities and society at large - important roles that sometimes are overlooked or go unnoticed.

“This year’s theme is timely as we are faced with various challenges that are compromising both the physical and mental well-being of our boys and men. Our men and boys need to be protected. Now is the time for all of us to come together to give our support to our boys and men. Our own safety is invariably linked to the safety of others.

“This day also calls for reflection on our lives. So often our behaviour and indulgences are detrimental to our physical and mental well-being which in turn compromises our safety. I take this opportunity to call on all men and boys to think of the consequences of their actions as they not only have repercussions on themselves but on that of their families, communities and our country as a whole.

“We believe in you and value your contributions. Your role as a father-figure in the home is more than ever important. I call on all boys and men to come to the fore and take up their roles and responsibilities.

“I wish all men in Seychelles and their families a happy International Men’s Day. Let this day be one that brings forth joy and happiness to you and your family.”
