Men as role model in society |30 November 2013

To coincide with the World International Men’s Day which was on November 19, a group of men soldiers and officers from different units of the Seychelles People’s Defence Forces (SPDF) attended a talk on the topic ‘Men as role model in the society’.

The presentation was made by Françoise Larue, staff welfare officer of the SPDF at the Seychelles Coastguard base at Ile Perseverance.
“Role model is a responsibility. So when others look up to you as role model, they can acquire your skills and good values and this is why a soldier should never pass on bad influences. A soldier is about discipline and setting good examples and each one of you is a role model in your own way,” Ms Larue told them.

“The way you portray yourself -- good or bad -- will influence others such as your children, especially boys, to follow in your footsteps as you will be their role model,” she added.

Ms Larue also talked about prolonging men’s life expectancy, keeping men and boys safe and how to avoid illnesesses.
She informed them that to fall sick is not only by means of catching a disease but if one is not prepared mentally, he is sick and it will be portrayed by his attitudes and actions.

The talk formed part of the ongoing educational programmes in the SPDF. Various everyday life topics, from health to good living values, are presented to staff of the SPDF during the year.

“Even if the SPDF is an institution with a very high disciplinary standard, you never know when one or two might decide to get involved in bad influences outside and these presentations can help make them portray good living values and be a role model at all times – both inside and outside the institution,” Ms Larue said after the presentation.

The participants in the session also viewed a video on the topic and later engaged in discussions, all pledging to be good role models.
