Young police officers get skills in leadership |16 December 2013

A group of 16 young police officers who recently graduated from the Police Young Leaders’ Programme and have been promoted to the rank of Sergeant, have received their certificates after following a short leadership course delivered with the partnership of the School of Business Management of the University of Seychelles (UniSey).

The certificate presentation ceremony was held at the Police Academy at Pointe Larue in the presence of the Commander of the Academy Superintendent François Freminot, the head of School of Business Management Shella Mohideen, lecturers and other police officers.

In a short speech, Commander Freminot said that the training replies to the direction taken by the police, and that the newly promoted young officers will be able to deliver what is expected of them as they have received the necessary skills.

He told the young officers that the government and the police believe in them. So he asked them to continue to learn so that they can deliver their duties in an efficient manner, and at the same time the police management will continue to support them.

“Things are changing out there as criminality is taking new dimensions. So we have to go out and tackle those problems. Please go out and make a difference in society,” Superintendent Freminot urged the officers.

On her part, Mrs Mohideen congratulated the newly promoted officers for having successfully completed their studies.

She said that as leadership skills are sometimes lacking, it is important to start young as one does not become a leader overnight.

She thanked the police for partnering with UniSey and pledged her organisation’s continued support to bring about the positive change that society needs.

“Go out there and be the agent of the change you want to see and work to help the police achieve its vision,” she told the officers.

On behalf of her colleagues, Sergeant Rudy Benstrong expressed her gratitude to UniSey for providing them with what she described as the opportunity to explore new horizons and to extend their leadership skills.

She hoped that the lecturers’ contribution will be helpful through the journey on which they have embarked.

The other policemen and women who received certificates are Sergeants Natasha Marengo, Anipha Hoareau, Bergita Brioche, Gerlye Salomon, Dean Decommarmond, Christopher Dogley, Firtzroy Kilindo, Martina Dugasse, Angelique Charlette, Jessica Boniface, Audrey Ally, Stephanie Lewis, Jimroy Jeannevole, Rudy Michel, Andrew Sinon and Janelle Ferley.
