Spectacular Christmas carol show enthralls audience |24 December 2013

After excitedly welcoming Santa Claus to their annual Christmas carol show, children living in the different orphanages in the country yesterday evening kept their audience and viewers at home enthralled with the spectacular performances they had put together for this year’s show.

It was in a packed and well-decorated International Conference Centre that the children welcomed Santa Claus, who came riding through the clouds on his famous sleigh drawn by reindeers.

Amid cheers, wonder, excitement and joy the children as well as adults watched as Santa arrived in town for the great show and where he will remain for the rest of the festive season.

Among the guests in the  audience were President James Michel and his daughter Laeticia, Vice- President Danny Faure, ministers, the speaker of National Assembly Dr Patrick Herminie, members of the diplomatic corps, MNAs, former First Lady Natalie Michel. Through loud applause and cheers Santa greeted the audience with his famous ‘ho ho ho’ as he settled to watch the children’s performances, danced with them and saluted the audience.

Dressed mostly in red and white, except for the children of Angels’ Choir who were in yellow and white, the children from the different choirs – Foyer de la Providence, Angels, President’s Village,
Foyer de Nazareth, Les Rossignols and the National School – showed off the best of their talents as they performed some of the most popular and much appreciated carols accompanied by synchronised movements and mimes.

The show was also punctuated at intervals by poems and words of reflection recited by the children themselves.

There were poems which reminded us that at this time of great excitement and joy, we should not forget the true meaning of Christmas which is joy, peace, love, forgiveness and thoughtfulness for the less fortunate and those suffering from wars and other calamities.

The guest artists for the evening were Alexandra Duckworth with ‘So this is Christmas’ and Telcy with ‘O Holy Night’.

One of the most spectacular pieces of the evening was Bonnonm Nwel performed by the boys of the Foyer de Nazareth. Dressed as little elves in their green and red outfits, the boys who claimed to have been very good throughout the year were asking Santa only for two teeth.

Their performance was extraordinary and the audience was over-excited.

The evening’s performance ended with a Christmas medley and Santa Claus saluting the audience from his sleigh.

Our selection of photos taken by our photographer Joena Bonnelame show some of the choirs in action during the show.
