Google Alerts internationalises VIOAS’ declaration of Azerbaijani’s President as ‘Man of the Year’ |27 December 2013

The global electronic news agency Google Alerts has internationalised the declaration by the Seychelles published magazine VIOAS (Voice of the Indian Ocean and Arabian Sea) of Azerbaijani’s President Ilham Aliyev as ‘Man of the Year.’

In its December 24, 2013 issue, Google Alerts quotes the report of the news agency of Azerbaijan’s APA filed from Baku which introduces the VIOAS magazine thus: “VIOAS magazine from Seychelles spreads the voice of the strategically important Indian Ocean and Arab Sea region to the world. The main aim of the journal is highlighting major geo-political developments in the region, as well as drawing attention to ecosystem protection, global warming, the fight against piracy, development of tourism and contributing to strengthening friendly relations among the peoples living on the shores of the Indian Ocean.”

The Google Alerts story is published alongside a reproduction of the cover page of the December issue of the magazine referring to their choice of Azerbaijani’s President Ilham Aliyev being re-elected on October 9, 2013 for another term, after ten years in office, with overwhelming support of his people.

That a magazine like VIOAS chooses a leader from the Caucus region of Central Asia as its 'Man of the Year' tells us how much the world has changed over the last century with Azerbaijan becoming a model of incisive and inclusive development for most emerging countries. President Aliyev is representative of the statesman-like qualities which combined with intelligent and resolute leadership are guiding the people of the once third world towards modernity in the early years of the 21st century. Under today’s globalisation impact, the balance of power is steadily shifting from the Atlantic towards the Indian Ocean and Pacific.

“Seychelles was once referred to as a tiny 'nation', despite that, globalisation has provided me with the bravado to state at several international forums that ‘No country is small if it is surrounded by the sea’ and to assert the fact that people who inhabit small countries are not necessarily 'small people’,” the publisher of the VIOAS magazine, James R. Mancham, the founding President of the Republic of Seychelles, stated in the leading article concerning the choice of the President of Azerbaijani as 'Man of the Year.'
