School heads meet in first meeting for the year |20 January 2014

The Ministry of Education hosted this year’s first head teachers meeting at which new appointments and some teacher movements were announced.

It was also revealed that Silhouette school is temporarily closed due to low enrolment of students over the recent years. The ministry says it is collaborating closely with IDC (Islands Development Company) in the event that there is a need to re-open the school in the near future.

Another major announcement is that Praslin secondary students will not start their school year today on account of road problems caused by recent bad weather on the island. As work progresses by Land Transport and the situation is resolved, parents and students will be informed when classes will resume for Praslin secondary students.

The meeting, held on Saturday at the School of Education’s auditorium, was attended by Designated Minister Vincent Meriton, Minister for Education Macsuzy Mondon, principal secretary for Social Affairs Linda William-Melanie, principal secretary for youth Alain Volcère, principal secretary for Education Merida Delcy, head teachers, chairpersons of school councils and parents teachers association.

With regard to the teacher movements and new appointments, Monica Accouche, who was the head teacher at the School for the Exceptional Child, has been appointed as an education officer in the Special Needs Section at the Ministry of Education. Heidi Francourt, who was the studies coordinator at the School for the Exceptional Child, becomes the school’s new head teacher.

The deputy head of Anse Royale primary, Kathleen Samson, has moved to Anse Aux Pins primary school as the new head teacher.

Fatma Bibi, who was the studies coordinator for La Misère primary, is now the new head of the school while the previous head teacher Steve Hoareu has moved to Mont Fleuri primary.

During the meeting, those present also had the chance to listen to two presentations. The first one was by PS William-Melanie on different aspects of social affairs that can affect education and how to go about resolving them, as well as how the concept of ‘Our school our concern’ can lead to success in the students.

The second presentation was by PS Volcère and Alvin Lawrence, director for public and policy affairs in the President’s Office, on the newly launched programme ‘Valer pour mwan, Valer pour nou tou’.
