Seafarers association receives film proceeds |24 January 2014

Proceeds from a special screening of the Hollywood blockbuster film Captain Phillips have been handed over to the Seychelles Seafarers’ Association.

The Ministry of Home Affairs and Transport held a special screening on November 14 last year of the film, where invitees were requested to make a contribution of SR125 each.

The special screening of the film and the video documentary on piracy in the Seychelles was an opportunity for those invited, including members of the diplomatic corps, various business leaders, former Seychellois hostages and other specially invited guests, to come together for a few hours to note just how close the piracy menace came to the shores of the Seychelles and the impact it had then and continues to have on our country.

The red carpet event which was hosted by Minister Joël Morgan, who also holds the chairmanship of the High Level Committee for Piracy, was supported by the management of Deepam’s Cinema, who generously made available the theater for the special show, which in total raised a sum of SR19,050.

Accepting the proceeds earlier this month, the chairman of the newly formed Seychelles Seafarers’ Association Albert Napier and the association’s secretary Gerald Ernesta, thanked Minister Morgan for hosting the event and for raising the funds, which according to Mr Napier is not only greatly appreciated but much needed.

Minister Morgan assured Mr Napier of the government’s continued support towards the work the association is doing for the fishermen and seafarers of Seychelles and expressed his special thanks to all those who made the event possible such as the Deepam’s Cinema, Sandra Hanks, who was the Master of Ceremony to the event, and who is also the sister of the principal actor in the movie, Tom Hanks, as well as all those who generously donated towards the cause such as Mason’s Travel, Air Seychelles and Hunt Deltel, to name a few.

The funds will be evenly distributed between the Seychelles Seafarers’ Association and the Seychelles Apostolat de la Mer.
