Francis Rachel Street to become one-way road |30 January 2014

The two existing traffic lanes along Francis Rachel Street will as from February 1, 2014 become a one-way road, taking traffic from the Le Chantier roundabout towards the town centre only.

In addition to the new one-way flow of traffic, a new lane has been built from the Victoria Clock Tower allowing motorists to access the Stad Popiler car park.

These form part of new traffic flow arrangements that will be implemented along Francis Rachel Street in Victoria as from this coming Saturday and are in line with the bigger Victoria Traffic Management Master Plan.

As part of these new arrangements, the existing entrance to the Stad Popiler car park will be used by vehicles coming from Le Chantier driving one-way towards the town centre.

A new entrance to the Stad Popiler car park built further down will have both entry and exit accesses.

Motorists coming from the north and west of Mahé into Victoria and going to the south will now have to go through Palm Street onto 5th June Avenue or through Independence Avenue onto 5th June Avenue and proceed southwards.

Motorists coming from the south going to Beau Vallon may use Francis Rachel Street directly onto Revolution Avenue and those coming from the south going to English River district and beyond may also use this road instead of the 5th June Avenue.

Motorists in 3-tonne vehicles and above are encouraged to use 5th June Avenue when driving into or through the town area.

According to the Seychelles Land Transport Agency (SLTA), congestion may be avoided on 5th June Avenue by passing through Independence Avenue and merging into the traffic at the Independence Avenue roundabout or by going around Quincy Street onto Palm Street toward the English River district area and beyond.

Noting that the new traffic arrangements may at first be uncomfortable requiring some time to adjust,   the SLTA with the Seychelles police traffic unit, the SLTA traffic warden unit will be deployed over the coming weeks to assist and direct motorists.

“Our aim is to ease and relieve traffic congestion making your motoring experience on our roads more enjoyable,” says SLTA in a communiqué.

The SLTA is counting on motorists’ cooperation and understanding to improve traffic circulation in Victoria.
