Large crowd takes part in hopeful walk for cancer |05 February 2014

A great number of people joined the Cancer Concern Association last night at the Seychelles Hospital for the candle light march called ‘A Hopeful Walk for Cancer’.

In a short address prior to the start of the march, Minister for Health Mitcy Larue said her ministry is committed to working closely with the association in the fight against cancer.

She added that the march shows the commitment of the association and that of the Ministry of Health towards this cause.

Mrs Larue added that one of the steps to be taken is to do much more in educating members of the public on the concept of cancer and to dispel the myths that are linked to this illness.

The march is the first in the week-long activities being hosted to mark the World Cancer Day which is celebrated every year on February 4.

Seychelles has for the first time joined the rest of the world in marking this day in February instead of October which is a month dedicated to breast cancer.

This proposal was approved by the members of the association during its annual general meeting in November last year.

The activities are being held under the theme ‘Dispel the Myths’ or in Creole Laverite lo kanser.

From the Seychelles Hospital, those who had turned out for the walk marched through 5th June Avenue, along Independence Avenue, around the Clock Tower to the St Paul’s Cathedral where a praise and worship service was celebrated for those who have survived and are still fighting cancer.
