Fair showcases available jobs |07 February 2014

Available jobs in both the public and private sectors are being showcased in a two-day job fair which opened yesterday at the International Conference Centre (ICCS).

The fair has been organised by the Ministry of Labour and Human Resource Development.

The tourism industry, as is normally the case, was more prominent with more vacancies on offer through hotels and resorts like Ephelia, Hilton Seychelles with LaBriz Silhouette and Double Tree Allamanda, Berjaya Beach Resort & Casino,  Le Meridien Fisherman’s Cove, Ste Anne Resort, Kempinski Resorts, to name a few.

It is worth noting that Hilton Seychelles has an impressive online training which an employee just needs a password and an internet connection to be able to access freely.

The Minister for Labour and Human Resource Development, Idith Alexander, yesterday toured the stalls and chatted with the organisers or jobseekers who had come at the fair. She was accompanied by her principal secretary Veronique Bresson and other high officials of her ministry.

All jobseekers had to fill an application form for the job they are interested in and which the organisations are supposed to process later on.

There were not that many jobseekers present in the morning but the organisers hoped this would pick up as the day progressed. They were also hoping more would visit the fair today.

Organisations like the Seychelles Civil Aviation Authority (SCAA), Laxmanbhai, Seychelles Public Transport Corporation (SPTC), Flight Information Region, Islands Development Company (IDC), Ministry of Environment and Energy – Meteorological Services, Seychelles Police Force, National Drugs Enforcement Agency (NDEA), Seychelles National Parks Authority (SNPA), Seychelles Fire and Rescue Services Agency (SFRSA), Ministry of Community Development, Heg and Job Plus agencies, Small Enterprise Promotion Agency (Senpa), the Seychelles Business Financing Agency (SBFA) to name some, had staff on site explaining how their organisations function and the training programmes available.

As for the Department of Public Administration (DPA), which has the overall responsibility for the management of the Seychelles Public Service, has something very interesting on work ethics going on at its stall. It has listed a number of values at work places and if you think there should be more you have the option to add to the list on a sticker.

If a person wants to be self-employed instead of being employed, he or she can visit the Senpa and SBFA stall for all the information he or she needs to set up his or her own business. While Senpa deals mainly in cottage industries, SBFA deals with the financing of small businesses. If you want to start a business in such fields as tailoring, arts, graphics, handicraft, bakery, snack production and food processing, hairdressing, mechanics, manufacturing, repairs & maintenance, jewellery making, horticulture, backyard farming, fishing, cleaning services, you can contact SBFA for financial assistance. The maximum loan disbursed there is R300,000.

The Ministry of Labour and Human Resource Development also offers training through its Skills Development Programme, aimed at assisting young jobseekers between the ages of 18 and 35 years to secure gainful employment.

There are over 400 jobs available in various sectors of the economy according to the ministry’s vacancy list being circulated at the fair.

The accompanying photos show Minister Alexander and her team visiting some of the stands at the fair.
