'Values for One, Values for All' (Valer pour Mwan, Valer pour Nou Tou) programme |08 February 2014

February dedicated to ‘respect’

Respect is the value chosen for the month of February under the 'Values for One, Values for All' (Valer pour Mwan, Valer pour Nou Tou) programme initiated by the youth department and the Seychelles National Youth Council (SNYC) in collaboration with the Ministry of Education.

This month’s value was launched during a special assembly at the English River secondary school on Thursday morning.

Head teacher Marie-Claude Morel led the ceremony in the presence of youth principal secretary Alain Volcère;  Alvin Lawrence, a member of the National Youth Policy Forum; SNYC staff, teachers, parents and students of English River secondary school.

The main focus during the assembly was on the new mural which illustrates the school’s new motto: ‘Avek lanmour ek respe nou determinen pour progre e sikse nou lekol’ translated into English as ‘With love and respect we are determined for the progress and success of our school’.

Those present got the chance to hear about the value ‘respect’ through the eyes of the students themselves and this was read out by head girl Shamira Barbier and head boy Stanio Sally – both secondary five students.

“The motto on the mural represents our commitment towards our school and studies where respect is represented and can be seen and identified in everything we do. Respect for ourselves in the way we dress and the way we conduct ourselves. Respect for others, our school, our community, and our teachers. Respect for the resources and all facilities that have been put at our disposition. Respect for our environment,” read Shamira and Stanio.

“Not only students, but also parents and the general public can always glance at the mural as it faces the 5th June Avenue. It reminds us all that the value ‘respect’ is important,” said Mrs Morel.
“It could have been noted that during the month of determination in January many of you showed the determination to take decisions and changes that are positive towards your studies. Punctuality which was among the problems that the school was trying to improve on has really gotten better,” Mrs Morel added.

She also noted that the school has been working on the values in the past whereby they have been encouraging the students to wear their attire in a proper manner as per the school regulations.

During the assembly, the chairperson of the English River secondary school council, Dora Ernesta, made an appeal to parents and students: “I ask all parents to live the values with our children in our homes, reinforce the values in schools and in our communities. Students, tomorrow it is you who will have to play the key role and keep on striving for our society. Today your preparation for the future keeps on going.”

She took the opportunity to thank the students and teachers for the effort and she asked them to continue on the good path.

Besides the mural and other messages about values around the school, emphasis on the living good values are being passed on to students during Personal and Social Education classes, religion lessons and weekly assemblies.
